Energy Grants for Pensioners in 2026: What You're Entitled To

Energy grants for pensioners in 2026 include free insulation and heating upgrades through ECO4 and the Warm Homes Local Grant, the £300 Winter Fuel Payment for those on Pension Credit, and the Warm Home Discount (£150 off electricity bills). Pension Credit is the key benefit that unlocks most schemes.

If you're a pensioner struggling with energy costs, there's more help available than you might think. Several government schemes specifically benefit older homeowners — especially if you receive Pension Credit, which acts as a key that unlocks multiple grants.

This guide covers every energy grant and payment available to pensioners in 2026 — from homeowners in Manchester to retirees across the country — who qualifies, and how to apply. All information is sourced from official government websites.

Why Pension Credit Matters So Much

Before we get to the grants, there's one thing every pensioner should check first: are you claiming Pension Credit?

Pension Credit tops up your weekly income to at least £227.10 (single) or £346.60 (couples). But beyond the extra money, it's also a gateway benefit — receiving it automatically qualifies you for:

  • ECO4 — Free insulation and heating upgrades
  • Warm Homes: Local Grant — Free energy efficiency improvements
  • Winter Fuel Payment — £100–£300 per year
  • Cold Weather Payment — £25 for each 7-day cold spell
  • Council Tax Reduction
  • Free TV licence (if aged 75+)

Hundreds of thousands of eligible pensioners don't claim Pension Credit, according to government take-up statistics. If you're not sure whether you qualify, check at gov.uk/pension-credit or call 0800 99 1234.

Not sure which grants apply to you?

Your eligibility depends on whether you receive Pension Credit, your EPC rating, and your council's criteria. We check all of it.

1. Warm Homes: Local Grant

The Warm Homes: Local Grant is one of the best options for pensioners. It covers the full cost of energy efficiency improvements including insulation, heat pumps, smart heating controls, and solar panels.

How pensioners qualify

  • Pension Credit recipients — automatically qualify via the benefits pathway
  • Income under £36,000 — most pensioners will meet this threshold
  • EPC D–G property — older, less efficient homes (common for pensioners who've lived in the same home for decades)
  • England only — privately owned or privately rented

Apply at gov.uk/apply-warm-homes-local-grant or call 0800 098 7950.

For full details, see our Warm Homes Local Grant guide.

2. ECO4 — Free Insulation (Closing December 2026)

ECO4 is particularly valuable for pensioners because Pension Credit is a qualifying benefit. If you receive it, you're automatically eligible for free insulation including cavity wall, loft, and solid wall insulation.

Even without Pension Credit, many councils include people aged 60 and over as a priority group under ECO4 LA Flex. This means your council can refer you if you're on a low income or have a health condition worsened by cold housing. Councils like Hull, Nottingham, and Manchester have dedicated teams for this — see our city guides for local details.

⚠️ ECO4 closes 31 December 2026 with no replacement scheme. If you're eligible, apply now rather than waiting.

3. Boiler Upgrade Scheme — £7,500 for Heat Pumps

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump. There's no income test — any homeowner in England or Wales replacing a fossil fuel system can apply.

This is a good option for pensioners who don't qualify for fully-funded schemes but still want to reduce their heating costs. The grant covers a significant portion of the installation cost.

For a detailed comparison of all heat pump grants, see our heat pump grants guide.

4. Winter Fuel Payment

The Winter Fuel Payment is £100–£300 paid once a year to help with heating costs. From winter 2024/25, only pensioners receiving Pension Credit (or certain other benefits) are eligible. Previously, all pensioners received it.

If you qualify, it's paid automatically — you don't need to apply.

This is another reason to check Pension Credit. Claiming it could get you an extra £100–£300 per year on top of the weekly top-up.

5. Cold Weather Payment

If you receive Pension Credit, you automatically get £25 for every 7-day period when the average temperature in your area drops to 0°C or below. This is paid automatically.

⏰ ECO4 closes December 2026 — some suppliers have already met their targets

Frequently Asked Questions

Do pensioners automatically qualify for free insulation?

Not automatically, but pensioners on Pension Credit are automatically eligible for ECO4 and are strong candidates for the Warm Homes Local Grant. Even without Pension Credit, income below £36,000 may qualify you.

I'm 62 but not yet at State Pension age. Can I still get help?

Yes. The energy grants listed above are not age-restricted — they're based on income, benefits, and property. You may still qualify for the Warm Homes Local Grant (income under £36,000) or ECO4 (if you receive other qualifying benefits).

My home is well-insulated (EPC C or above). Can I still get help?

Most schemes require an EPC of D or below. However, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has no EPC restriction — you just need a valid EPC certificate. Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment are also unrelated to your home's EPC.

Can my family apply on my behalf?

Yes. A family member can help you apply for the Warm Homes Local Grant online or call the helpline together. For Pension Credit, you can also get help from Age UK or Citizens Advice.

I already had loft insulation done years ago. Can I get more?

If your existing insulation is below current recommended levels (270mm for loft insulation), you may qualify for a top-up. Your council or installer can assess this during a home survey.

Are these grants really free? Is there a catch?

For owner-occupiers who qualify, the Warm Homes Local Grant and ECO4 cover the full cost of recommended improvements. There's no repayment required. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives a fixed grant towards the cost — you pay any remainder.
