Free Loft Insulation: Government Grants for 2026

Last updated:

Loft insulation is one of the simplest and most effective ways to cut your heating bills. An uninsulated home loses around 25% of its heat through the roof. The government currently funds loft insulation through multiple grant schemes — including ECO4 (until December 2026) and the Warm Homes: Local Grant. If you're eligible, the work is completely free.

What Is Loft Insulation?

Loft insulation involves laying mineral wool (glass or rock wool) or other insulating material between and over the joists in your loft space. The recommended depth is 270mm (about 10.5 inches). Many older homes have little or no loft insulation, or only 100mm installed decades ago.

If your loft is accessible and not damp, this is a straightforward job that typically takes 2-4 hours for a professional installer. There's minimal disruption — no scaffolding, no mess inside your home.

Which Grants Cover Loft Insulation?

  • ECO4 — Available UK-wide until December 2026. Funded by energy suppliers. Covers loft insulation for eligible households.
  • Warm Homes: Local Grant — England only. Up to £15,000 for energy efficiency measures including loft insulation. Administered by local councils.
  • Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund — For social housing providers upgrading their properties.
  • Home Energy Scotland — Grants and interest-free loans for Scottish homeowners.
  • Nest (Wales) — Free home energy efficiency improvements for eligible Welsh households.

Good to Know

Loft storage

If you use your loft for storage, raised loft legs can be fitted so insulation goes underneath your boarding. This is covered by most grants.

Loft hatch

An insulated loft hatch is usually included in the installation to prevent heat escaping through the access point.

Flat roofs

Flat roof insulation is a different process. If you have a flat roof extension, mention this when you check eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is loft insulation really free?

Yes, if you qualify for ECO4 or the Warm Homes: Local Grant, the full cost of loft insulation is covered. You pay nothing.

How long does loft insulation last?

Mineral wool loft insulation lasts 40+ years and doesn't degrade. Once installed, you shouldn't need to replace it.

Will I lose my loft storage space?

Not necessarily. Installers can fit raised loft legs so boarding sits above the insulation layer, keeping your storage space. This is usually included in grant-funded work.

My loft already has some insulation. Can I get a top-up?

Yes. If your current insulation is less than 100mm deep, you're likely eligible for a free top-up to 270mm under ECO4 or the Warm Homes: Local Grant.

Do I need to clear my loft before installation?

Yes, any items stored in the loft need to be moved before the installer arrives. The installer will work in the empty loft space.

Can tenants get free loft insulation?

Yes, but you'll need your landlord's written permission. The grant application can be made by either the tenant or the landlord.
